Chihuahua Adopts Chick- Andrea Austin [ 3/11/2005 - 17:31 ] # A pet chihuahua dog has adopted a baby chick in China.

Huahua took charge of the chick as soon as owner Liu Bangyang's daughter brought it home.
She regards the chick as her baby and stands guard to make sure it comes to no harm, reports the Chongqing Morning News.
And, whenever the chick strays too far, Huahua picks it up gently in her mouth and puts it back in its cot.
Liu, from Guiyang city, Guizhou province, said: "We'll try our best to raise the little chicken, if that's what Huahua wants." from Ananova...

I received this message from my friend Jessica…
Please, everyone! Take Action! www.nochancearkansas.org
"As fellow animal rescuers, we are begging you for your help to contact the mayor of Little Rock Arkansas concerning the unnecessary deaths of 40 dogs, 5 that were on hold for PET PALS.
Please take a minute and go to www.nochancearkansas.org You will see two of the puppies that we were saving that were killed along with all the information at this horrible shelter. We are asking you to spread this information to everyone you know. We need to get things changed there so these dog’s deaths were not in vain.
PET PALS is in the process of contacting all nationwide media in the hopes someone will pick up this story and help the rescues of Little Rock in the future.
You can find the e-mail address for the Mayor, City Director and the City Board on this website. Please copy us at petpals@99main.com and the Arkansas animal group at concerned citizens@nochancearkansas.org

Kristen Kirby's 16-month-old Australian cattle dog, Summit, does just about everything you'd expect out of a puppy.
He runs in the park, fetches tennis balls, plays with Kirby's toddler and sometimes darts into the neighbor's yard, playfully ignoring his owner.
Summit is much like every other dog in the neighborhood, except for one thing - he can't hear. Kirby, who now lives in Atlanta, adopted Summit last spring from Summit County Animal Shelter just before she moved east.

| | | Find Your Best Friend at the Zoo- Andrea Austin [ 9/15/2003 - 13:01 ] #
Hundreds of dogs, cats and small and furries will be up for adoption at the Detroit Zoo on September 27 & 28, 10am to 5pm!
This 3rd annual event features the Michigan Humane Society as well as 24 other organizations. Adoption fees vary by the organization but the animals are spayed or neutered and up to date on their shots.
Editors Note: as the proud owner of an adopted pet, Daisy, I put my highest recommendation on this event. Not only is it cheaper that going to a breeder, an adopted pet truly knows that you have saved their life and are forever grateful!
Daisy says...open your heart to an animal in need, just like I used to be!
Now held in the spring and fall, "Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo" is made possible by a partnership between the Michigan Humane Society and the Detroit Zoo. This partnership, along with community support, has grown the event into the largest off-site adoption event in the country, placing nearly 8,000 animals since 1993. In 2001, the fall event was added in order to place more homeless animals.
Sponsored by Oldies 104.3 WOMC, 99.5 WYCD Detroit's Best Country and Mirror Newspapers, "Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo" is held outdoors under tents in the Detroit Zoo front parking lot at 10 Mile Road and Woodward Ave. There is no charge for admission to the adoption event or for parking.

| | | Dogs Rescued After Home Owner Dies, May be Up for Adoption- Andrea Austin [ 7/23/2003 - 10:45 ] #
The owner of the dogs, living on Detroit's East Side, was found dead on Sunday morning.
Concerned neighbors could hear the dogs barking and scratching inside the home and threw food inside on Tuesday.
The Michigan Humane Society investigated and was in the process of getting a warrant when animal control cut a lock to get inside.
There was some initial question as to the proper procedure and which organization should perform the rescue, but the two have been turned over to the Humane Society.
They may be up for adoption soon. more from WDIV Channel 4...

| | | Chicken Tied to Helium Balloons up for Adoption- Andrea Austin [ 6/27/2003 - 12:30 ] #
An inhumane person tied over 100 helium balloons to the pictured chicken and sent him for a ride.
Police were able to save the feathered friend by shooting the balloons one by one with a pellet gun.
The chicken is now up for adoption...
Kat Brown, deputy director of the shelter, said: "This is a great chicken, a friendly chicken, a chicken that is ready for a relationship." more from ananova...

The Husseins traditionally were partial to big cats, and many lions and cheetahs were found abandoned in the zoo.
They will soon be relocated to their new homes in South Africa.
Many Iraqi dogs have been adopted by loving servicemen.

| | | Find Your New Pet Online- Andrea Austin [ 5/28/2003 - 16:40 ] # Ever think about adopting a loving pet from a shelter or rescue?
Ever changed your mind because it's so hard to see all the others in their cages?
Ever not been able to find the breed/size/age/sex you're looking for at your local shelter?
The infamous Daisy, Eric's and my second baby girl and Pepper's sister, came to us all the way from Big Rapids, Mi.
We happened to find her online at www.Petfinder.org. I loved this site because you're able to search for the extact type of pet you want from thousands of shelters all over the country. Also, most of the shelters have online applications so you can get pre-approved for your new little baby. Only bummer: the site's a little slow. Let's hope it's because their server's jammed from all the traffic!
For those of you that have met Daisy, you'll all agree that she's just the best! Maybe it's because she was rescued from death row in the city pound. Maybe it's because she's just so cute!
One extra bonus about adoption: Pepper, our Jack Russell Terrier, was $450. Paired with her puppy shots she was over $500! Little Daisy the "Long Duck Dong" (80's maniacs will recognise that name) was only $75, and she already had her shots!

| | | Iraqi Dog Rescued, Sent To Michigan Vet- Andrea Austin [ 5/28/2003 - 12:29 ] # An American soldier resqued a German Shepard from the hands of a few Iraqis. He found them beating the dog and dragging it by a wire.
The soldier, who happens to be a veterinarian, cared for the dog at camp, and then spent $1,500 of his own money to fly the dog to the care of a friend in Michigan.
When the soldier returns, he will bring the dog home with him to Texas. BRAVO! WDIV Channel 4
